Jaw pain from temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) can be very uncomfortable but leaving it untreated can make matters a whole lot worse. In fact, although it may seem like it’s just a matter of a popping or clicking jaw accompanied by minor or occasional pain, ignoring TMD can lead to much more serious problems, including arthritis. Here are a few different types that can affect your jawbone.

Infectious Arthritis

Infectious arthritis can occur when the temporomandibular joint becomes infected. Thankfully, it can usually be addressed with antibiotics and if any lingering damage to the jawbone is present, jaw exercises may be prescribed.

Traumatic Arthritis

This can occur if your jawbone becomes injured during a tooth extraction, intubation, or other accident. In these cases, you may require treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), warm compresses, a soft diet, and restricted jaw movement.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis typically occurs in patients over the age of 50 and is typically caused by disk degeneration or perforation. For this type of arthritis, common treatment is often the use of an oral appliance.

Secondary Degenerative Arthritis

This is common in women ages 20 to 40 who have a history of trauma or of TMJ dysfunction. It often manifests as trouble opening the mouth, pain during jaw movement. It is typically treated with the use of an oral appliances when flare-ups occur, and some patients have found additional relief with the help of corticosteroid injections.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis can cause TMJ dysfunction, but it is typically one of the last joints affected. Still, it can be extremely painful and in children, it can cause mandibular growth disturbance and facial deformity if not treated. Treatment typically involves wearing an oral appliance during sleep, and NSAIDs may also be prescribed.

Remember, temporomandibular joint dysfunction may seem like it’s no big deal, but if not treated promptly, it can eventually lead to painful arthritis that could cause more pain and damage of the jaw. If you are suffering from even minor symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, don’t risk your health. Speak to your dentist today and get the relief you deserve.
